The Cardinal Rule of Prayer

September 5, 2014 by Ellen 25 Comments

“Did you see that? A bird just flew into your window!”

“I know.”

“Here he comes again!”

WHAM!

“It’s a cardinal!”

The bright red bird slammed himself against my office window once again.

“How often does he do that?”

“A couple of times a day, several days a week, and he’s been at it for over a year!”

Cardinal 1

After about six months, I named the bird. After nine months, I began having conversations with him (NOTE: 90% of my day I am alone in the office. It’s ok if I talk to the bird!):

“Redd, you are such a birdbrain! Stop. It. Stop it!  You aren’t getting anywhere!”

Mr. Redd is a perfect example of the definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.

Hmmph! I would never beat my brains out time and again, repeating the same thing, with no sign of progress! Not me! Never!

Or would I? The next morning during my prayer time, I found myself petitioning God for the same lost loved ones, the same prodigals, that had been off and on my prayer list for a year or more. Redd came to mind. I thought about his persistence and tenacity. I thought how consistently he beats himself against the window. He never gives up.

The only difference between me and Redd, is that I do give up. I pray and pray and pray, and don’t see anything happening. I think “What’s the use? This will never change!” And I stop beating my head against the window.

Luke 18:1 One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. (NLT)

Shouldn’t I be insane in my praying? Can I do that? Pray insanely for someone or some situation? God is always working. I may never see the progress God is making. Or, the it may seem so small, that I don’t notice. Then one day, I look around, and my prayer has been answered!

Slowly, gradually over time, God has answered. No big fanfare or lightning flashes. Just a snail-like movement that almost goes unnoticed.

Mr. Redd may have seemed insane, but he taught me a powerful lesson:

Let your prayers be insane!

Always expect different results, responses, behaviors.

Always expect your prayers to make a difference! God can do it!

Rejoice Always!

June 29, 2014 by Ellen 18 Comments

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Tired. Cranky. Summer sinus cold. Struggling to find something to be grateful for. John Ortburg, in his book Soul Keeping, suggests thinking of something you are thankful for before you get out of bed each day. He calls this “practicing gratitude”. This particular day, I wasn’t practicing gratitude very well.

Then, I remembered I had been memorizing 1 Thessalonians 5:16 -18 “Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This has got to be THE ONE scripture that is impossible to do! How can I rejoice always, pray without ceasing and always give thanks?? Can it be done??

Silently I climbed out of bed to dig deeper into God’s word. Settling into my favorite chair, cup of coffee in hand and favorite crocheted afghan around my legs, I began to study the scriptures.

Rejoice. To delight (charm, enchant, captivate) in God’s grace. To be captivated with God’s grace.

Always. Pray. Talk to God. Without ceasing. Don’t stop!

Give thanks. Eucharisteo, literally thankful for God’s good grace. In everything. All circumstances, good or bad.

God’s will. His preferred will. Pondering this information, I plucked at a loose thread on the afghan. Coming out of my reverie of rejoicing always, I noticed the beautiful stitches. They were intricately entwined. I knew if I pulled the loose piece of yard, it wouldn’t come out, because the threads were so tightly woven together.

Then I realized God’s word – especially 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – were like the yarn in my afghan. Interwoven. I can’t rejoice always, without praying and giving thanks. I can’t pray without ceasing unless I rejoice and am thankful in all circumstances. These three verses were knit together as tightly as my afghan.

I studied the crocheted afghan closely. It looked like it was made with one single thread of yard. Each stitch built on the single thread until a full afghan was created. One thread also holds these three verses together: In Christ Jesus. Without Christ in me, I can’t rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks in everything.

And just as each stitch in the afghan builds on one thread, each of these scriptures builds on the cornerstone of Jesus Christ.

I wrapped the afghan around me, feeling safe and content in its warmth. I will wrap God’s word around me feeling safe and joyful as I go about my day, rejoicing, praying and giving thanks in all my circumstances!

Welcome!

Torrential rains had been pelting us for weeks. With the rains came weeds growing tall in the flower beds. But I noticed other new growth, too. It wasn’t colorful flowers. It was teeny, tiny little oak trees! Squirrels had been working hard, burying food for later. The rains had soaked and softened … Read More...
