Beauty from Ashes

November 5, 2015 by Ellen 14 Comments

This month, I thought I would share some favorite photos with you. Normally, my husband John is our family photographer. But I have been enjoying taking pictures with a little “idiot-proof” point and shoot zoom camera he gave me.

This pictures this week are Windsor Ruins, which can be found between Natchez and Port Gibson, Mississippi. Windsor was once the largest antebellum home in Mississippi.

In 1890, during a house party, a guest left a lighted cigar on an upper balcony, and Windsor burned to the ground.

Look how beautiful the ruins are – the brick Corinthian columns are crowned with ornate cast iron capitals. There is beauty from the ashes!

Isaiah 61:3 The Voice

As for those who grieve over Zion,
God has sent me to give them a beautiful crown in exchange for ashes,
To anoint them with gladness instead of sorrow,
to wrap them in victory, joy, and praise instead of depression and sadness.
People will call them magnificent, like great towering trees
standing for what is right.
They stand to the glory of the Eternal
who planted them.

Until next week,

A lighted cigar! It usually doesn’t take very much to wreck a building (and a life), but thank God for beauty He gives for ashes.

Girl that’s some beautiful point and shoot going on. I love old homes. Many tragic stories associated with them. Still beautiful.

How interesting that those pillars stood while the house around them burned. Kind of brings added meaning in the context of the verse. “…Wrapped in victory, joy and praise.” I love how God gives us word pictures, with life paralleling scripture, allowing us to grasp spiritual truths in tangible, human ways. He’s so thoughtful like that. 🙂 Pretty pictures. Yay for getting a new camera! 🙂

Welcome!

Torrential rains had been pelting us for weeks. With the rains came weeds growing tall in the flower beds. But I noticed other new growth, too. It wasn’t colorful flowers. It was teeny, tiny little oak trees! Squirrels had been working hard, burying food for later. The rains had soaked and softened … Read More...
